What is a decent midgrade window tint product and how much does it cost?

I remember that stuff from Texas. Noon existent here in the PNW for all practical purposes.

I paid about $250 for 50% VLT in ceramics on everything but the windshield from a local shop . High quality tints and very good install. Only been on the car about 6 months now but they look perfect. I’d do darker if it were legal but this is exactly what I wanted anyways. Had considered getting the windshield done too but it would have doubled the price. Glad I didn’t since it’s got a big ol’ c rack in it now. But the heat reduction from the ceramics is so great that I really would love to have the full coverage. Any time I’m driving with the sun behind me, I don’t even need AC even in the desert in 90+ t emps.

If you’re going to tint your windows don’t cheap out. Get good 3M tint, it’ll last forever and has a lifetime warranty.

Suntek Carbon. 35% all around. Perfect and keeps the heat out.
Cost depends where you are located. In the bay area it’s about 250 for 7 windows. Those tiny triangular windows behind the c-pillar count as windows.

^ this. Anything that filters less light (in other words, greater than 35%) is a waste of money.

The shop I’ve taken all my cars to (Frederick, MD) uses Suntek Carbon XP as their top tint. The 3M ceramic stuff is also really good, I have friends who have it. I wouldn’t settle for less than one of those. My shop gets $330 for a small coupe up to $390 for a van or large SUV. They charge $125 to strip old tint. A windshield top strip is an extra $35 and sunroofs range from $35 to $75.
But all their stuff is CNC cut and their installers do a great job. Ive taken 3 cars there, my dad has taken 6. And everything has been perfect.

The shop where I had my wife’s Forester done had options from $200 to $750. The more expensive/the more heat it keeps out. I went with the fancy stuff because it was for our daughter’s benefit more than anything else.
The $200 stuff looked fine and is what I would go with if I tinted the Ranger.

Are you saying I should buy higher or lower than 35%?

35% or darker

I mean I'd probably like to just do 70% so that I get the cooling effect without it looking darker/illegal. I'm not talking about limo tinting the windshield haha. My only concern was the rainbow effect from my polarized sun glasses. I know I get a little bit of it out my side Windows. So I'm sure it would be annoying in front of me all the time.

You just can’t see out at night, but that’s what you have Instrument Flight Rules for, right?

Whoa, you found a shop that tints sunroofs? I asked my tint guy to do that once (I had a Subaru where the sunroof didn’t come tinted) and he said he wouldn’t do it for all the money in the world due to explosion issues.

Explosion issues?

Idk if it’s true, there’s tons of internet debate about it. Basically that the tint reflects heat into the glass and causes moisture retention, thus any dramatic change in temperature may cause the tempered glass to shatter. It’s probably an old tinter’s-wives-tale, but all the guys in the Southwest believed it.

Hmm, interesting theory but I wonder why windows don't do it? Does it have to be flat to work? Ive never even heard of this. Maybe the temperature swings aren't enough in my area.

I think it has to do with the way that sunroofs are framed in (ie no room for expansion of the glass) vs windows (that can expand into the rubber weatherstrip). Plus the horizontal force on the sunroof and flex vs. what the windows face, which is mostly the vertical vector. It’s mostly a southwest thing, where temps routinely get above 100 and then sink to the mid 60s at night. Likely all bogus, though.

I see perfectly fine. After, a day I was totally used to it.

Dude: this is Oppo where we are excellent to each other and don't tell each other we think something they've done is unsafe or, frankly, asinine. So I won't tell you that.

You see perfectly fine until some rainy night when you can't. Then it's too bad for the other guy. I just hope I ain't that guy.
